As cities across the globe seek smarter and greener transportation solutions, shared mobility has emerged as a vital component in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and congestion. In Ireland, this movement is gaining momentum, with e-bikes and bike rental services, such as Bleeper and MOBY, becoming popular choices for commuters. These eco-friendly alternatives are not only reshaping urban transport but are also making a meaningful contribution towards a more sustainable future.

Shared mobility is a concept that has rapidly evolved over the past decade, offering convenient alternatives to private car ownership. Services like car-sharing, ride-hailing, and micro-mobility options such as e-bikes, as well as traditional modes of public transport, have become widely available. However, bike-sharing and e-bike rentals are increasingly leading the charge, particularly in urban areas where traffic and pollution are growing concerns.

Cycling has long been considered a sustainable mode of transport, but e-bikes add a new dimension by providing an accessible option for those who may not typically cycle due to longer distances or challenging terrain. E-bikes, with their battery-assisted pedalling, enable riders to travel further and faster with less effort, opening the possibility of cycling to more people.
The transport sector is Ireland’s second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing 11.63 Mt CO2 eq. in 2022, according to recent MPI research. Private cars alone are responsible for a significant portion of this, with 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 emitted annually from 2.27 million licensed cars. Given that many of these cars are used for relatively short trips, often under 10 kilometres, the reliance on private vehicles for every journey is both environmentally unsustainable and unnecessary.

E-bike and bike rental schemes offer a cleaner alternative for these shorter journeys. By opting for cycling, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint while simultaneously alleviating traffic congestion in urban areas. Moreover, bikes require minimal space for parking, freeing up valuable urban space currently dominated by parked cars.

Ireland’s major cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway are witnessing a growing demand for cycling infrastructure. In this year’s Budget, the Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe announced a €1 million a day investment in the development of cycling and walking infrastructure countrywide. Overall, there will be €3.9 billion allocated to the transport sector.

With improved cycle lanes and dedicated bike parking areas, urban environments are becoming more bike-friendly. E-bikes are gaining traction as a preferred option due to their versatility. Whether commuting to work, running errands, or exploring the city, e-bikes offer a convenient and efficient way to navigate urban areas without contributing to air pollution.

E-bike rentals also bridge the gap for people who want to enjoy the benefits of cycling without the commitment or costs associated with owning a bike. These rental services provide an ideal solution for tourists, occasional cyclists, or residents who may not have storage space for a bike at home. With apps making it easier to locate, rent, and return bikes, the process is seamless and efficient.

Beyond the environmental advantages, e-bike and bike rental services can offer significant financial savings compared to car ownership. The annual cost of running a private car in Ireland, including fuel, insurance, tax, and maintenance, can reach over €10,000. In contrast, subscribing to a bike rental service is a fraction of the cost, with the average e-bike journey in Dublin costing €3.00. Then of course, there is the added benefits of lower stress, less time stuck in traffic and more convenient parking,
For businesses, supporting shared mobility options like bike rentals can also demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Encouraging employees to commute by bike through incentive schemes or offering on-site bike storage facilities can reduce a company’s overall carbon footprint and promote a healthier workforce.

As cities continue to grow, the need for sustainable, efficient, and accessible transport solutions becomes more pressing. E-bike and bike rental services are set to play a pivotal role in this transformation by offering an eco-friendly alternative to private car use. By embracing these services, individuals and businesses alike can contribute to reducing Ireland’s transport emissions while also reaping the personal and financial benefits of a cleaner, healthier commute.

The future of Irish mobility is one that favours shared, sustainable solutions. E-bike and bike rental schemes are just the beginning, as Ireland pedals towards a greener and more connected future.
